The media reported on the release of American prisoner Coyle in Afghanistan
The Taliban movement, which controls power in Afghanistan, has decided to release American researcher Dennis Coyle from prison after receiving a request from his mother. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on March 24.
"The Minister of Foreign Affairs [of Afghanistan] stated that after a letter from the detainee's family, the Supreme Court considered the period of his detention sufficient and decided to release him," the Afghan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Coyle was detained in January 2025 after spending 20 years in the country and studying the local culture and language.
Earlier, in January last year, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the United States and Afghanistan had been negotiating a prisoner exchange for several months, but discussions stalled because Kabul claimed that only two US citizens were in custody: researcher Dennis Coyle and American soldier Polynesis Jackson. At the same time, Washington demands the release of another prisoner, Mahmoud Habibi.
