On Wednesday evening, November 26, a shooting occurred in Washington, the capital of the United States. Not far from the White House, an unknown person opened fire on the National guardsmen, two are in critical condition. The police have already detained the suspect. Presumably, he is a native of Afghanistan, who received asylum in the United States after the Americans left this Middle Eastern country in 2021. Read more about the incident in the Izvestia article.

Shooting at the White House: what is known

On the evening of November 26 (about 22:15 Moscow time) in the center of the US capital Washington, not far from the White House, a man attacked the National guardsmen. According to the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Christie Noem, two were injured, they are in critical condition. The shooter was also injured and is now in the hospital.

The incident occurred in the area where the diplomatic offices are located, and the White House is about 600 meters away. The neighborhoods around the presidential residence were cordoned off, and federal agents arrived there. Parks on the south and north sides of the White House were also closed. Secret Service vehicles drive past the checkpoint.

The country's president, Donald Trump, who is currently in Florida as part of the Thanksgiving celebrations, was immediately notified of the incident.

"The animal (the shooter — Ed.) is also seriously injured, but despite this, he will pay a very high price," he wrote on the Truth Social network.

Donald Trump also called the incident an act of terror. It is important to note that the attack on the National Guard took place the day after Trump called Washington an "absolutely safe city" and said that there had not been a single murder in the last six months amid the deplorable criminal situation in the United States as a whole.

What is known about the shooter in Washington

According to available information, the attacker turned out to be a 29-year-old native of Afghanistan who has lived in the United States since 2021 [when the United States withdrew from this country] and was granted asylum in the United States in 2025. According to Christie Noem, he arrived in the United States as part of the program for receiving Afghan allies of the United States after the withdrawal of American troops from the country. It was one of the decisions of the outgoing Joe Biden administration and the Democratic Party. It should be noted that about 80 thousand refugees from Afghanistan have arrived in the United States since 2021.

Later, NBC, citing a relative of the suspect, reported that the shooter served alongside American special forces soldiers in Afghanistan and arrived in the United States after 10 years of service.

Investigation against an Afghan who attacked National Guardsmen in the United States

According to Jeff Carroll, Assistant Chief of Police for Special Operations at the Metropolitan Police Department, the man acted alone.

FBI Director Cash Patel said the incident was being treated as an attack on federal law enforcement officers. The investigation will be led by the FBI along with other interagency organizations, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service.

Vladimir Krotkov, Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor at the Faculty of Political Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, suggested in an interview with Izvestia what the reason for the attack on the National Guard might be.

— This terrorist act, the attack on security personnel, especially on the eve of such a holiday (Thanksgiving Day — Ed.) and near the White House, is a kind of symbolic act. Most likely, certain forces want to destabilize the situation, to show that the government is not coping with security," the expert believes.

Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences, drew attention to the polarization of American society in the domestic political struggle.

— There is a clash, relatively speaking, between the views of conservatives who advocate a traditional "white" America and those who support "colored" ones. Moreover, I think that this may well have been artificially initiated to show that the situation is explosive, and the current president is a usurper, a dictator, and everyone is ready to go against him," the expert notes to Izvestia.

According to him, the no kings movement appeared in the United States in the same context. What is happening is an indicator of political radicalism, which does not come from the bottom up, but from the top down.

— It is quite possible that there are customers among the same Democrats, that is, the leaders are trying to use the situation to their advantage.Factors such as free access to weapons and problems in healthcare also increase the atmosphere of tension," Konstantin Blokhin explained.

US to check Afghan citizens

After the incident, Donald Trump ordered in a video message to check all Afghan citizens who entered the United States during the administration of the country's previous president Joe Biden. Also, the American authorities "indefinitely" stopped processing all immigration requests concerning Afghan citizens.

Vladimir Krotkov did not rule out that following the inspection of Afghans, "purges" among other migrants may follow.

— In principle, this may also affect people from other countries, especially from the eastern direction, where the situation is not very stable, — suggests the interlocutor of Izvestia.

Alexandra Voitolovskaya, a senior researcher at the US Department of Foreign and Domestic Policy at the IMEMO RAS, believes that Trump's already promoted policy towards migrants in the United States will not change, as it is already extremely harsh. In the Big Beautiful Bill (eng. One Big Beautiful Bill Act) contains a huge number of financial measures to tighten the screws on migration, the expert notes. This includes money for a wall with Mexico, detention of people, thorough screening of migrants, increased funding for the federal migration service, and other measures that already reinforce the policy that the White House pursued with regard to legal and illegal migrants in the United States.

Izvestia reference

The big, beautiful bill is the Budget Reconciliation Bill passed by the 119th U.S. Congress. It contains tax and spending policies that form the basis of President Donald Trump's second-term agenda.

— It has already been stated that very serious checks will be carried out on all people from Afghanistan. Perhaps there will be some increased restrictions on the entry of this particular group of citizens, as by analogy with the so-called anti—Muslim law of Trump's first term, adds Alexandra Voitolovskaya.

Vladimir Krotkov adds that, in general, this act highlights the policy of "Trumpism" and the anti-immigration narratives that it constantly articulates.

"And everything related to the threat to security and some other problems, he (Trump — Ed.) shifts to his opponents from the Democratic Party, whom he accuses of all sins,— concludes Vladimir Krotkov.
