- The Cuban Ministry of Energy explained the new blackout by the sudden failure of the generator at the thermal power plant.
A new power outage throughout Cuba occurred due to the failure of the generating unit at the Nuevitas thermal power plant. This was announced on March 22 by the Cuban Ministry of Energy.
"From that moment on, there was a cascading effect in the working machines," The Guardian newspaper quotes a fragment of the agency's report.
As explained by the Cuban Ministry of Energy, to eliminate the consequences of the accident, it used certain "micro-islands" of generators to supply energy to hospitals, water supply systems and other critical infrastructure. The island's authorities continue to work on eliminating the blackout.
The Guardian, in turn, notes that power outages are a standard situation for Cuba, especially in the last couple of years. Among the reasons, the newspaper cites the outdated infrastructure of the electric grid, as well as the US oil blockade, due to which the island does not receive the necessary fuel for food.
Earlier in the day, the Cuban state-owned energy company reported that there had been a complete power outage on the island. This happened for the second time in the past week: the blackout in Cuba already took place on March 16. Then there was a complete rupture of the national electric power system. The accident was eliminated on March 18.
