- Zakharova called the publications about Siyarto's "calls" to Lavrov an inflamed fantasy.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in response to media reports about "calls" from Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, said on March 21 that Hungary's enemies had played out their imagination too much.
"This suggests that Hungary's enemies have an inflamed imagination," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.
Thus, the diplomat commented on a publication in The Washington Post newspaper in which a certain European official claims that Szijjarto allegedly regularly calls Lavrov between EU meetings.
On March 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Szijjarto in the Kremlin during the visit of the Hungarian Foreign Minister to Moscow. The diplomat said that during the talks the sides discussed issues of energy security and the release of Hungarian prisoners of war. The meeting was also attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov and First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
