- Szijjarto confirmed the blocking of the loan to Ukraine until the restoration of Friendship
On March 19, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed his commitment to block the granting of a military loan to Ukraine until the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline is restored.
"We serve the interests of Hungary, and no one can provide Ukraine with a military loan of €90 billion as long as Ukraine keeps us in an oil blockade, no matter what the German chancellor says," Szijjarto said in a video posted on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized in the Russian Federation extremist and banned).
According to him, if Brussels allocates a military loan to Ukraine bypassing Hungary's decision, this "will have very serious consequences" for the future and functioning of the European Union (EU).
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on March 17 that the latest EU proposals on the Druzhba oil pipeline would not change Hungary's position on financing Ukraine. He noted that "the situation is extremely simple": Kiev will not receive EU money until Hungary has oil.
Later, the EU finally agreed to provide Ukraine with a loan of €90 billion. The head of the Council of Europe, Antonio Costa, held talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who blocked the loan, and demanded that he "adhere to the decision of European leaders" on the allocation of money.
