The fate of the nuclear non-proliferation regime and the work of documents to prevent the development of such weapons are alarming against the background of the military and political crisis in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. This was stated on March 16 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a video message to participants of the Moscow Conference on Nonproliferation.

"This year's discussions will take place against the backdrop of acute military and political crises in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. The fate of the nuclear non—proliferation regime is of serious concern," reads the text of the speech published on the agency's website.

The minister noted that the attack on Iran took place "in the midst of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington" to resolve the situation around the republic's nuclear program.

"Now more and more countries are becoming convinced that only the possession of nuclear weapons can become a reliable guarantee of protection against unlawful attacks on their security. And this in itself carries serious proliferation risks," he said.

Lavrov added that the fate of the strategic offensive arms treaty remains uncertain. Lavrov recalled that the agreement was terminated on February 5, 2026.

On March 13, Alexey Likhachev, the head of the Rosatom state Corporation, pointed out that there were no signs of Iran developing nuclear weapons. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted that the Iranian nuclear program has always attracted a lot of attention.

On March 3, Lavrov said that the risk of nuclear nonproliferation problems getting out of control is currently growing. At the same time, he recalled the words of French President Emmanuel Macron about Paris' intention to use nuclear weapons to protect its interests, including outside the country.
