- AfD will consider nominating its candidate for the German presidential election in 2027
The German opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is considering the possibility of nominating its own candidate for the post of federal president of Germany in the 2027 elections. This was announced on March 15 by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the AfD.
"The Alternative for Germany essentially advocates that the federal president be directly elected by the people. Since it is currently impossible to get a majority in support of the relevant amendment to the basic law, we will certainly think again about a suitable candidate who can unite the country, rather than divide it," Weidel is quoted as saying by Tagesspiegel.
According to Weidel, the federal president "should be a man of respect, standing above all parties and respected throughout the country, and not, for example, a party politician in need of care who abuses the highest state office in order to continue party politics."
It is noted that in Germany, the federal president is elected by the Federal Assembly, which is specially convened for this purpose, a constitutional body that consists of deputies of the Bundestag and representatives of the federal states.
In 2027, the Federal Assembly will meet on January 30, 2027.
On November 9 last year, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during the celebration of the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, declared a threat to German democracy that had never existed in history. In addition, he added that "populists and extremists" profit from fears, and called on citizens to act to protect the state.
