Cuba to release 51 prisoners in agreement with Vatican
The Cuban government has said it will release 51 prisoners in the coming days as part of an agreement with the Vatican. This was reported on March 13 by the Reuters news agency, citing a statement from the country's Foreign Ministry.
"In the spirit of goodwill and the close and flexible relationship between the Cuban state and the Vatican, with which we have historically maintained contact on the review of cases and the release of prisoners, the Cuban government has decided to release 51 people sentenced to prison in the coming days," the publication says.
According to the agency, this agreement was signed two weeks ago by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla and Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.
It is specified that during March, 553 prisoners were released as part of another deal brokered by the Vatican.
The publication notes that this decision was made at the peak of pressure from US President Donald Trump, who made a number of threatening statements.
The Atlantic magazine reported on March 2 that the United States is considering an operation against Cuba based on the results of attacks on Iran and Venezuela. According to the magazine, the American leader allowed the possibility of a "friendly seizure" of the island with a population of 11 million people.
On March 5, Trump announced that the political regime in Cuba could collapse. He also confirmed that the United States is in touch with the communist leadership of Cuba, as instability on the island is intensifying after the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
On March 9, the US president threatened Cuba with an "unfriendly seizure." In addition, Trump added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is holding talks with the Cuban side.
