Russia remembers Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as an outstanding statesman and a kind and sincere friend of the Russian Federation. This was announced on March 5 by Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko.

"We remember Ayatollah Khamenei as an outstanding religious and statesman who did much to develop and strengthen his country and strengthen its international prestige," Rudenko said.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that the Ayatollah had always remained a sincere friend of Russia and had made a significant contribution to the development of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on March 4 that the assassination of Khamenei and a number of the country's leaders was a meanness. The diplomat stressed that the alleged "Iranian threat" was only a pretext for implementing a plan to violently overthrow the constitutional order in Tehran.

The protected compound of Ayatollah Khamenei was damaged on February 28 as a result of Israeli strikes on Tehran. The residence where Khamenei usually stayed and held meetings with the country's leadership was significantly damaged. Iran's State Television (IRIB) confirmed Khamenei's death on March 1. He was killed early on Saturday morning, February 28, while performing work duties at his residence.
