More than half of Russians believe that the main manifestations of masculinity are courage, leadership and reliability. This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the online psychotherapy service Yasno among 2.5 thousand people from different regions of the country, which were reviewed on March 4 by Izvestia.

According to the study, 53% of respondents are convinced that a man should not show weakness. Among the key qualities that society expects from men, the survey participants named courage (66%), leadership (58%) and reliability (54%). In addition, in a romantic relationship, a man, according to some of the respondents, should show initiative and activity (38%), as well as be restrained and confident (21% each).

"In addition to the biological prerequisites, where a stronger or more masculine male is more likely to occupy a dominant status position, there are also social and psychological reasons," said Ekaterina Artemenko, a practicing psychologist, gestalt therapist and supervisor, community director of the Yasno service.

According to her, previously, men were required to have endurance, dedication and the ability to withstand high loads. Today, empathy skills, the ability to negotiate and ask for help are important for successful social adaptation, which may conflict with the traditional image of a "strong" man.

The majority of Russians have a generally positive attitude towards masculinity: 63% of women approve of it, 85% of men. At the same time, 48% of respondents believe that a man should persistently pursue goals, and 44% associate masculinity with financial well-being. As a result, as the authors of the study note, men's attention often shifts towards material achievements, while inner experiences remain in the background.

At the same time, Russians are showing a more flexible approach in matters of relations. Every third participant in the survey indicated that the emotional maturity of both partners is important for building a long-term union. Another 25% noted the importance of the convergence of values, and 24% — willingness to overcome difficulties together.

Inna Mirnaya, a psychologist and founder of the Institute of Family Psychology, which unites specialists working with families across the country, said on February 19 that in recent years, divorce among Russian couples has often become a conscious choice rather than a personal tragedy. According to her, in 2025-2026, the nature of breakups themselves is changing: they are less often associated with acute conflicts and more often with a gradual loss of emotional intimacy.
