The candidacy of the new Rahbar should be acceptable to various representatives of Iran's elite after Khamenei's death. This was stated by Ilya Baskakov, a junior researcher at the Department of the Middle and Post-Soviet East of the INION RAS.

In an interview with the Mail News on Monday, March 2, the analyst noted that, despite external pressure, a stable system of government has been formed in Iran since the Islamic Revolution, so the death of Ali Khamenei was a serious blow, but did not lead to its destruction. According to him, the country's spiritual leader should have high authority in Islamic law, be fair, religious and capable of governing the state, and his candidacy should be acceptable to different groups of the Iranian elite. The final decision should be made by the Council of Experts.

Baskakov admitted that a successor could have been informally determined during Khamenei's lifetime. His son Mojtaba Khamenei and Ayatollah Khomeini's grandson Hassan are among the possible candidates, but the transfer of power by inheritance may cause dissatisfaction among the clergy. Baskakov mentioned former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani as a more moderate scenario, although he considers such an option unlikely. In his opinion, the arrival of a figure capable of maintaining the current course, such as Alireza Arafi or Sadek Larijani, is more likely.

At the same time, the expert stressed that the personality of the spiritual leader does not determine the country's policy completely, and the further development of the situation will depend on the internal situation and external pressure. In the event of a serious escalation of the conflict with the United States and Israel, a large-scale restructuring of Iran's entire political system is not excluded.

Ayatollah Alireza Arafi was appointed to Iran's interim governing council on March 1, which will govern the country until a new supreme leader is elected. According to the Iranian constitution, after the death of the supreme leader and until the election of a new head of state, a special transitional council is temporarily in charge. Arafi is a cleric and a member of the Council of Guardians of the Constitution, notes 360.ru . He is also a supporter of the hard line that Khamenei pursued: opposition to the United States, Israel and the suppression of internal protests, the website writes. kp.ru .

Khamenei's death as a result of an attack by the United States and Israel became known on March 1. Khamenei was killed early on Saturday morning, February 28, while performing work duties at his residence.

In an interview with RT, Alexander Vavilov, a Middle East expert and professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stressed that Khamenei's death was "a serious loss for the country and the Iranian society as a whole." Pro-government rallies began in the republic against the background of the death of the head of state.
