- The analyst cited attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz as the reason for the rise in oil prices.
The reasons for the rise in oil prices are attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the actual restriction of navigation in the region. This was announced on March 2 by Andrew Lipow, president of the American consulting firm Lipow Oil Associates, economist and analyst.
"I believe that the sharp rise in oil prices this morning was a reaction to the attacks on three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the actual closure of the strait: tankers began to bypass the region and anchor, waiting for a decrease in tension," he said.
According to Lipou, such a price increase could have been expected, as the market is now trying to assess how long the fighting will last and how they will affect the supply of petroleum products through the Strait of Hormuz.
"If the situation in the Middle East drags on, Brent crude prices could easily rise to $90 per barrel, as up to 20% of global oil supplies, about 20 million barrels per day, could be withdrawn from the market," the analyst concluded.
On the London ICE exchange, on the same day after the opening of trading, a rise in Brent crude oil prices was recorded. According to the data, the cost per barrel increased by 13.04%, reaching $82.37. The last time the price rose to over $82 was in January of the previous year.
Al Jazeera TV channel reported on March 2 that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Prior to that, on March 1, the IRGC announced that Iran had launched missile strikes against three American and British tankers in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. It was clarified that a fire had occurred on the tankers.
The Strait of Hormuz, which is used for the passage of oil tankers, was completely closed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on February 28. Some major oil companies and leading trading houses have suspended the supply of crude oil and fuel through the Strait of Hormuz amid Israeli and US strikes on Iran.
