US President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency in Washington in connection with a large-scale environmental incident on the Potomac River. This was announced on February 21 by FEMA (the US Federal Emergency Management Agency).

"Trump has approved the declaration of a state of emergency in the District of Columbia," the statement said.

Earlier, the mayor of the capital, Muriel Bowser, had already declared a local emergency and appealed to the White House for support.

The accident led to the ingress of about 900 thousand tons of wastewater into the river just 15 km from the official residence of the president. Despite the fact that the leak was stopped on February 9, the administration warns of the risk of an environmental disaster.

On February 18, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt issued a warning that Washington was in danger of an environmental disaster due to a sewage spill into the Potomac River if local authorities did not do something.
