The key idea of the FPS genre is in dynamic first-person battles against a multitude of enemies. Such games are often difficult by nature. Some are designed for single-player play, while others are built around multiplayer, where experienced players become the most dangerous opponents. Some FPS games offer lengthy story campaigns, but these projects often have a particularly steep difficulty curve. To compete well, and sometimes just survive, you'll have to really upgrade your skills. About such first—person shooters - in this collection.

Doom: The Dark Ages

Release year: 2025
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S

When the Executioner of Doom finds himself in the devastated village of Halim, the battle with the demons begins instantly. Without a pause for thought, the player is thrown into the thick of the action, and the number and variety of enemies steadily increases until the very end. One of the main innovations of this part of Doom is the shield, a tool for blocking attacks, parrying and jerking. To succeed in Doom: The Dark Ages, it may take practice — this is the most radically different part of the series in recent years.

Superhot: Mind Control Delete

Release year: 2020
What to play on: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Superhot has become one of the most unusual representatives of the genre in this decade. The special time management mechanics — enemies move only when the player moves — instantly attracted the attention of shooter fans. But many wondered if the development team would be able to develop this idea into a sequel to Superhot: Mind Control Delete. The second part offers a more extensive level structure and expanded character customization options through a system of "hacks". The player can, for example, miss, direct the bullets back at the enemies, or start the level immediately with a katana in his hands. Like the original, the game is capable of disorienting even veterans of the genre, and completing especially difficult levels requires patience and careful development of its non-standard mechanics.

Cruelty Squad

Release year: 2021
What to play on: PC

Projects that are ready to go against the canons and allow the player to experiment appear infrequently. Cruelty Squad is just such a project, both visually and in terms of mechanics. The creator of the game, a modern Finnish artist— brought his whimsical style and vision in a glitch aesthetic to the screen. Thanks to this, Cruel Squad may seem repulsive and completely unplayable to some. But the strong-minded will open up almost limitless possibilities in this FPS. The player assumes the role of a bounty hunter who sets out to eliminate new targets in the world of victorious corporate cyberpunk. Megalocomperies have seized power, contract killings, organ trafficking, and the implant market are flourishing. To move forward and complete the tasks, you will have to make the most of all the available mechanics and not be afraid to use the opportunities to "break" the game in your favor with the help of the same glitches.

Arma 3

Arma 3 is considered the ultimate open-world military simulator. The game takes place on huge Mediterranean islands: the project successfully combines the freedom of the sandbox with realistic combat physics. Unlike most shooters, Arma 3 relies not on accuracy per se, but on understanding the underlying mechanics. There is no gentle auto-targeting and health regeneration. This is a real test of discipline and endurance: the game generously rewards those who know how to wait and strike at the right moment, and mercilessly punishes those who overestimate their abilities.

Release year: 2016
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

This shooter takes players to a ruined world overrun by zombies. In the open sandbox, you need to build an impressive fortress to fend off the oncoming hordes of the dead. In 7 Days to Die, each game session is fraught with as much danger as the previous one. The difficulty lies in the limited time and lack of resources — you have to search everything in a hurry to at least get a chance to survive another night.

Rust

Release year: 2018
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

PvP is a sandbox game in which survival requires constant concentration and a deep understanding of game mechanics. Players appear in the world with almost nothing and are forced to hunt, extract resources and build primitive shelters in order to survive their first hours. The pace of the game directly depends on the other players on the server: the level of chaos is determined by how aggressive the surrounding survivors are. There are no shortcuts to success here — just a slow and persistent grind and the hope of being the first to spot the enemy.

SCUM

Release year: 2025
What to play on: PC

SCUM makes survival in the open world hyper-realistic and very violent. The huge map serves as an arena for a bloody TV show in which prisoner players must survive for the amusement of the public and dystopian corporations. The number of gameplay systems is large here: serious concentration is required to keep the situation under control. In battle, you can not relax for a second — in addition to other players, you will have to fight with mechanized guards, bears, zombies and other deadly opponents.

Insurgency: Sandstorm

Release year: 2018
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Insurgency: Sandstorm is considered one of the most hardcore projects in the genre — the game mercilessly punishes the slightest mistakes. Here, the tactical approach is at the forefront: in order to repel an assault or capture key positions, the team must act coherently and coordinate its actions clearly. This is a truly intense and exciting FPS that fans of serious, demanding multiplayer shooters will especially appreciate.

What to play on: PC

Retro FPS is experiencing a real renaissance today. Many people call Ultrakill one of the best in the wave of modern retro FPS. Here, players are encouraged to upgrade their "style" by making as spectacular kills as possible. This makes every fight especially spectacular. In addition, the cost of a miss is extremely high here, the game does not forgive inattention.

Six Days In Fallujah

Release year: 2023
What to play on: PC

Although the development of Six Days in Fallujah is still ongoing, the game has already been released in early Access. It offers perhaps the closest-to-reality experience of urban fighting in video games. The project was created in consultation with military personnel who took part in the battle for the Iraqi city of Fallujah in the early 2000s. The game features both single player and co-op mode, and missions recreate real-world operations. Players will have to move through densely built-up urban areas with many buildings, narrow alleys and hidden tunnels. There are no safe zones here — it is impossible to capture and hold a point. Opponents move freely through underground passages, outflank and ambush, constantly keeping the player in suspense.
