Not only Fallout: The best nuclear apocalypse games of recent decades
The second season of the acclaimed series based on the Fallout games has come to an end. The Bethesda studio hints that the next part is in development, but does not give any specifics. If the soul demands post-nuclear adventures, the gaming industry has a lot to offer right now. For more information, see the Izvestia collection.
Wasteland series
Genre: CRPG
When it was released: 1988-2020
What to play on: Commodore 64, Apple II, Macintosh, PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Of course, you should start with the legendary isometric party CRPG with a top view from inXile Entertainment studio. She was inspired by the creators of the first Fallout. The battles here are turn-based and in many ways resemble the XCOM series, but instead of alternating moves of each unit, the entire squad acts at once in one turn. Thanks to this, the battles are noticeably faster than in classic CRPGs, which is especially appreciated by those who do not like drawn-out battles. The games are set in an alternate post-nuclear version of the United States. The choice here is the basis of gameplay: even seemingly minor decisions can have far—reaching consequences that unfold over the course of the plot.
Mad Max
Genre: action, adventure
When it was released: 2015
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Mad Max is an indirect prequel to the successful film Mad Max: Fury Road, which was released in theaters just four months before the game's release. Despite the fact that the film was warmly received by viewers and critics, many players were even pleased that the game was not directly related to it — game adaptations of films still have a dubious reputation due to the numerous failed releases of the 2000s. Mad Max has managed to impress both players and critics with explosive action and a well-crafted open world that is really interesting to explore.
Metro Exodus
Genre: Shooter
When it was released: 2019
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
In 2013, a full-scale nuclear conflict broke out between the world powers. Within a few hours, intercontinental ballistic missiles were launched all over the world. Large cities were destroyed, the Earth's surface was contaminated with radiation, and the habitual civilization virtually ceased to exist. People went down to live in the subway. The Metro series from studio 4A Games has firmly taken its place in the post-apocalyptic genre thanks to the outstanding trilogy of survival-horror first-person shooters. Metro Exodus was the franchise's first step towards an open world. This decision organically expanded the narrative and gave the players an impressive journey.
I Am Alive
Genre: action, adventure
When it was released: 2012
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
The main character of I Am Alive is a man who returns to his hometown of Havenport a year after a nuclear and natural disaster in search of his wife and daughter. This game can't compete with the others on this list in terms of graphics, but it rightfully deserves to be here thanks to its ambitious mechanics. For example, the devastating effect of physical exertion on a character's condition or a chronic lack of ammunition, forcing players to take risks: point weapons at enemies in the hope that they will believe that they are loaded. The realistic approach to combat was a real breath of fresh air for the post-apocalyptic genre at that time.
Nuclear Throne
Genre: shooter, roglike
When it was released: 2015
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
A roguelike shooter set in a world where humanity has no hope. It became extinct, and now the planet is inhabited by mutants and monsters. Players fight in wastelands using powerful weapons and radiation to grow new limbs and gain special powers. The main goal is to find the mythical Nuclear Throne that can restore order to this crazy world.
ZERO Sievert
Genre: Survival simulator
When it was released: 2021
What to play on: PC
ZERO Sievert will send the player on sorties for survival in the midst of a fictional Eastern Europe that has survived a nuclear apocalypse. The bunker base will become a reference point between raids: merchants, weapon modification stations and zones are located here, where you can gradually upgrade your character before new exits into the wasteland.
Chernobylite
Genre: Survival simulator
When it was released: 2019
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch
"Survivor", inspired by the Chernobyl disaster and the STALKER series of games. The plot will take you to a realistic Exclusion Zone, recreated using 3D scanners. You will play as physicist Igor Khiminyuk, a former employee of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. He returned to Pripyat to find out where his fiancee had disappeared 30 years ago. On the way to the truth, players will encounter the military, other stalkers and supernatural creatures, and other dangers posed by the harsh new world around them.
Atomfall
Genre: RPG
When it was released: 2025
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch
The action of this game is based on another real radiation disaster — the accident at the Windscale nuclear power plant in the UK. In Atomfall, the accident provoked the appearance of a mysterious Exclusion Zone filled with mutants, artifact hunters, secret special agents and sects. You will have to fight to the death in the middle of the pastoral English countryside, with limited resources and ammunition, while unraveling the tangle of mysteries.
Black Future ’88
Genre: action-platformer
When it was released: 2019
What to play on: PC, Nintendo Switch
The world shook when Duncan, the architect of the Tower, began dropping nuclear bombs on the world. The player must climb to the top of the psychopath's hideout and destroy him — before his own heart stops. The atmosphere of cyberpunk dystopia in retro style favorably distinguishes Black Future ’88 from representatives of the genre, and the gameplay combines the best finds from other hits.
60 seconds!
Genre: Survival simulator
When it was released: 2015
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
A black comedy about the first moments of the atomic end of the world. Ted, a decent family man, will repeatedly face a difficult choice — how to gather everything you need in a minute, grab your household and lock yourself in a bunker. Who should I leave and who should I save? Which of the items will help you survive? Everything that was collected and everyone who was saved will be a decisive factor in the struggle for salvation. At 60 Seconds! great replayability, so you can "survive" until you get bored.
