- Bloomberg has learned about Macron's plans to create measures against US digital dominance
French President Emmanuel Macron intends to make regulation of the digital environment an important part of his foreign policy, calling on other countries to join and challenge the interests of American IT giants. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency on February 19.
"[At the international AI summit India AI Impact Summit 2026] in India, he called on other countries to join the 'new coalition of the willing,' and this initiative is rapidly gaining support in Europe, where about a dozen countries are considering the possibility of imposing restrictions on minors' access to social media," the article says.
It is noted that the French leader intends to strengthen the split between Paris and Washington, using the platforms of international organizations to attract allies. In particular, he announced that protecting children from the harmful effects of social media and AI will be a priority for France's G7 presidency, which it will host at the summit in June.
"The June summit in Evian will be the last major event before Macron leaves office in [2027] and promises to be a crucial meeting for transatlantic relations," the agency's authors note.
On February 18, Macron called freedom of speech on the Internet "complete bullshit" in the absence of transparency of social media algorithms. The French leader added that he wants to ensure "respect for public order" and the avoidance of racist speech and incitement to hatred.
