The European Union cannot agree on new sanctions against foreign ports and banks that Russia allegedly uses to sell oil. This was reported by Bloomberg on February 17.

"The European Union's attempt to impose sanctions against foreign ports and banks <...> is being resisted, which threatens to weaken the bloc's latest package of sanctions," the publication says.

The initiative of the European Commission to impose sanctions against foreign ports in Georgia and Indonesia has caused skepticism in several capitals.

In particular, Italy and Hungary opposed restrictions on the Georgian port of Kulevi. Greece and Malta, in turn, expressed doubts about the expediency of measures against port facilities in Indonesia. It is clarified that the disagreements also affected the financial sector.

It is reported that Italy and Spain are challenging the proposed sanctions against one of the banks in Cuba, which, according to Brussels, may be linked to Russian operations.

At the same time, Athens and Valletta are expressing concern about the plan to transform the "price ceiling" mechanism. We are talking about replacing the current restrictions with a complete ban on the provision of marine services, including insurance and transportation of oil from the Russian Federation.

The implementation of this step is complicated by the US position: Washington has not yet given clear commitments to support this initiative within the framework of the G7.

Experts note that the growing internal resistance risks significantly weakening the next package of sanctions. Despite the European Commission's desire to increase economic pressure on Moscow, the lack of consensus among key EU member states calls into question the effectiveness of the new restrictions.
