The media reported a shortage of dry wood in Estonia due to frosts
Estonia is faced with a shortage of solid fuels amid the prolonged cold weather — residents are forced to buy raw wood. This was announced on February 16 by the ERR broadcasting company.
"Residents who need to replenish supplies have to make do with low—drying, fresh wood," the publication clarifies.
ERR reports that prices for firewood have increased. They range from €75 to €80 per cubic meter. It is noted that the shortage is largely due to the fact that people buy fuel in advance "in reserve", and not only with the current increase in consumption against the background of cold weather.
At the same time, the duration of use of one cubic meter is influenced by the area of housing, building materials, the level of thermal insulation and the type of wood. On average, about 10 cubic meters are required for the entire winter, however, in the conditions of current frosts, one cubic meter is only enough for one to two weeks.
The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, said at the session of the European Parliament (EP) on February 11 that the cost of energy resources in Europe remains high and unstable, and called for accelerated investments in the development of renewable energy. According to her, one of the reasons for the price increase was the dependence of the European Union (EU) on carbon fuels, as well as the insufficient development of cross-border energy infrastructure.
