The highway to Teriberka was opened for organized convoys. What is known
More than 280 cars blocked due to bad weather were taken out of Teriberka. Traffic is organized in columns, accompanied by vehicles. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
The situation on the highway
More than 280 vehicles were removed from the snow-covered village of Teriberka. The passage has been blocked since Saturday evening due to a heavy snowstorm and almost zero visibility. According to the Minister of Transport of the Murmansk Region, Yulia Polyaktova, three groups of vehicles were withdrawn in an organized manner on Sunday, and the last convoy of 118 vehicles returned to Murmansk only at three o'clock in the morning.
On Monday, February 16, rescue operations continued. The authorities have planned the formation of new groups to guide the remaining transport, including large tourist and regular buses. To prevent congestion, the Murmanskavtodor set a strict schedule: at 18:00 the column will leave towards the village, and at 21:30 — in the opposite direction.
Eyewitness accounts
The storm took about a thousand tourists by surprise. Due to the hurricane-force winds, the road turned into a narrow snow-covered section, impassable even for off-road vehicles. Local residents helped the people who remained in the village by providing hot meals and temporary housing at the local school and cultural center. Some travelers tried to leave the village by private helicopters, the cost of a place in which reached 50 thousand rubles.
Eyewitnesses noted extremely difficult conditions on the highway at the time of the start of the snowstorm. One of the tourists told about the inability to continue driving due to the elements.
"We drove 40 meters away from the column from Teriberka. And there is no way further! It is impossible to speak," he said.
As the guide Alexey Renzhin explained, passenger cars that blocked the passage for special equipment prevented the rapid clearing of snow. As a result, the road services had to attract additional vehicles to break a path through the drifts.
Regional weather forecast
According to Tatiana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, the Murmansk Region has faced unfavorable meteorological conditions due to a cyclone centered over the southeastern Barents Sea. Gusts of south-westerly wind with a speed of 15 to 18 m/s were recorded on the Murmansk coast.
In the coming days, the Kola Peninsula will remain in the rear of the cyclone, with thermometers dropping to -20 degrees at night. During the day, the temperature will range from -10 to -25 degrees.
A gradual improvement in the weather is forecast by Thursday, February 19, when the region will come under the influence of an area of high atmospheric pressure. Despite the complete cessation of precipitation, the temperature background will remain abnormally low: both night and day values will decrease by another 3-4 degrees.
As the forecaster noted, negative temperatures will create difficult surface conditions in the region.
