The probability that graduates will turn out to be overeducated is higher among correspondence students, holders of vocational education diplomas and graduates of non-selective universities, a study by employees of the labor market research laboratory of the Higher School of Economics (HSE) showed, which was reviewed by Izvestia on February 16.

According to the researchers, in conditions of shortage of personnel, demographic compression and low labor productivity, the problem of excessive education is relevant. The economy is facing a shortage of qualified specialists, losing hundreds of thousands of university graduates whose knowledge and skills are not in demand.

In the course of the study, scientists have found that the probability of being overly educated is higher among correspondence graduates, holders of a diploma in vocational education and graduates of non-selective universities. On the contrary, graduates of selective universities have less risk of being in the wrong place, and this threat is also reduced by an honours degree.

It is specified that the probability of excessive education varies depending on the field of study. Thus, graduates of agriculture are more likely to find themselves in unsuitable positions compared to teachers. However, graduates of medical fields, mathematics and computer science and art have minimal risks. It is noteworthy that men are more susceptible to this phenomenon than women, which contradicts data from European countries. This is due to the prevalence of low-quality education among men in Russia.

According to the researchers, it is possible to combat the phenomenon of overeducation by improving the quality of education and focusing on practical skills.

In addition, employers are encouraged to review their qualifications. Higher education is no longer the exclusive criterion for determining the level of literacy and culture, as it was in the 1990s. Currently, the quality of secondary vocational education has improved significantly, and higher education has become highly differentiated in quality, the researchers concluded.

On the same day, it was reported that more than a third of Russian university graduates (35%) turn out to be over-educated for their jobs. It was noted that the analysis was based on monitoring data from the Ministry of Labor and Rostrud. The sample included graduates of bachelor's and specialist's degrees in 2021-2023 aged 18-29 years who did not continue their studies. Depending on the assessment method, the proportion of overeducated ranged from 34.4% to 40.1%.
