President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on holding a republican referendum, its date is set for March 15. The document was published on February 11 on the portal of the head of state.

A republican referendum will be held on the draft of the new Constitution of the republic with the question: "Do you accept the new Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the draft of which was published in the media on February 12, 2026?".

"To entrust the preparation and conduct of the republican referendum to the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which performs the functions of the Central Commission of the Referendum, as well as to territorial and precinct election commissions," the website says.

On January 21, Tokayev announced a large-scale political modernization of the republic's authorities. In the course of the reforms, it is planned to amend more than 40 articles of the Basic Law.

Later, on February 3, it was clarified that the draft of the new constitution of Kazakhstan would not include a clause on changing the borders of the republic. Also on February 9, it became known that the wording on the use of the Russian language in state organizations and local governments would change in the draft of the new constitution.

On February 10, Tokayev announced at an expanded government meeting that the country was moving to a presidential republic with a strong and influential parliament, completing the transition from a super-presidential form of government.
