The Ministry of Finance announced plans to oblige migrants to support families who moved with them.

Foreign citizens working in Russia may be required to provide family members who have moved with them at the regional subsistence level, the relevant amendments have been developed by the Ministry of Finance. This became known on February 10 from the materials of the government commission published on the website of the State Duma.

According to the initiative, a foreign employee will have to confirm the availability of income sufficient to support his dependent relatives. The amount of required income is planned to be calculated based on the minimum subsistence level in the region of residence using a special coefficient of the subject of the Federation. In this case, the calculation will be carried out separately for each family member.

If the changes are finally adopted, the new requirements may enter into force on January 1, 2027.

Starting from March 1, 2026, employers in Russia will have the right to dismiss foreign workers in the event of regional restrictions on the use of their labor, according to the new law. Previously, the Labor Code provided for such grounds for dismissal only under restrictions established at the federal level.
