"As a result of the explosions, ash rose to an altitude of 11.6 km above sea level, and the ash cloud spread 40 km northwest of the volcano," the group said in a statement on its website.
A red aviation hazard code has been declared, and the volcano's activity poses a threat to local and international transportation.
