Beijing has appealed to Washington to resume a strategic dialogue with Moscow and discuss the development of the situation after the expiration of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START Treaty). This was announced on Friday, February 6, by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China (PRC) Lin Jian.

"China calls on the United States to resume dialogue on strategic stability with Russia and discuss further measures after the START Treaty expires," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Lin Jian, speaking at a briefing, added that such a step is expected by representatives of the international community.

Earlier that day, American leader Donald Trump supported the development of a new, improved strategic arms agreement instead of the START Treaty. He stressed that the new agreement should be improved and modernized.

On February 4, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the United States had not given an official response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for countries to voluntarily comply with the START Treaty restrictions for at least a year after the termination of the agreement.
