In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Friday, February 6, and which church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for February 6th

In Russia, on February 6, Aksinya's Day was celebrated, also known as Ksenia the half-winter, or Aksinya the spring signifier. The holiday served as an important landmark in the national calendar. It was believed that it was on Aksinya that winter "snaps in half," which marked the imminent arrival of spring. The name "spring signifier" is due to the fact that natural phenomena on this date were used to judge the weather in the coming season.

In the old days, the morning on Aksinya's day began with a visit to the temple. Then the peasants started accounting for winter stocks. Sacks of grain were carefully counted in the barns, estimating how much rye, oats and other crops were left. By the beginning of February, at least half of the grain harvested in autumn should have been in the bins. If there was less of it, it was regarded as an alarming sign, foreshadowing difficulties before the new harvest.

Nature observations on Aksinya-vesnokazatelnitsa helped to plan future agricultural work. So, a blizzard and a blizzard predicted a prolonged spring and a late sowing season. And if the weather was clear and frosty, then early spring was expected. Accordingly, work in the field started earlier.

Other signs of the day:

  • Bright sun at sunset — frosts are coming soon;
  • rare, high clouds in a bright sky — for a thaw;
  • A titmouse knocks on the window in the morning — for good news;
  • there is still a lot of grain in the barns — for the well-being and prosperity of the family;
  • Bread is getting more expensive by February 6, leading to crop failures and a difficult year.

What not to do on February 6th

Aksinya's day was considered a special date on which strict prohibitions were in effect. They especially tried to avoid quarrels and conflicts. Our ancestors believed that the mood of this day sets the tone for the rest of the winter. Any rash acts committed on February 6, according to beliefs, could attract bad luck, illness, or lead to a long-term family disorder.

What else can not be done on February 6:

  • to start new important business — they will not succeed;
  • Cutting your hair and nails is believed to "shorten" your life force.;
  • to do needlework (sewing, knitting) — you can "sew" diseases to yourself;
  • tying knots on ropes is to "confuse" your fate;
  • changing the bed linen leads to sleep disorders and insomnia.

What is the church holiday on February 6th?

On February 6 (January 24, Old Style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg, one of the most revered Russian saints who lived in the 18th century. Born into a noble family, she married Andrei Petrov, a court singer. Her life changed dramatically after the sudden death of her husband, who did not have time to bring the last confession.

A young 26-year-old widow, wanting to beg forgiveness for her husband's sins, chose the path of foolishness for Christ's sake. She distributed all her possessions to the poor, put on her late husband's clothes, and answered only to his name. During the day, she wandered the streets of St. Petersburg, enduring ridicule and insults, and at night she went to the field for solitary prayer.

For her patience and great humility, Ksenia was granted the gift of foresight and miracle-working: she predicted events, helped people, and many miracles were performed through her prayers. The blessed one died around 1803 and was buried in the Smolensk cemetery. Later, a chapel was built on this site, which became a place of pilgrimage.

On the same day, the church commemorates another saint named Xenia, the Venerable Xenia (in the world Eusebia) of Milas, who lived in the 5th century. She was the daughter of a noble Roman senator and from her youth aspired to dedicate her life to God. After leaving home, the saint settled in the city of Milas in Asia Minor, where she was ordained a deaconess for her virtue.

The saint became famous as a wise mentor, comforter of the grieving and a generous benefactor. Ksenia died during prayer. According to legend, on the day of her death, a bright crown with a shining cross appeared in the sky, which accompanied her body until the funeral. Later, many believers received healing from her relics.

Prayers on February 6th

Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg is considered a special helper in arranging family life. They pray to her for the meeting of her husband, peace in the family, solace in sorrow, as well as for the health and well-being of loved ones. Venerable Xenia of Milas is traditionally asked for help in raising children, promoting health, spiritual insight and guidance on the right path.

Prayer of Xenia of St. Petersburg

"Oh, holy saint of God, blessed Xenia. Mercifully look with your eye upon us, the servants of God (names), before your sacred icon, with the tenderness of those who pray and ask for your help and intercession. Extend your fervent prayers to the Lord our God and ask for the forgiveness of our sins for our souls. For behold, with a contrite heart and a humble spirit, we call upon you, a merciful intercessor to Vladyka and a prayer book for us sinners, because you have received grace from Him to pray for us and deliver us from troubles. We beseech you: do not despise us, the unworthy, who pray to you and need your help, and ask for everything useful for salvation, so that through your prayers to the Lord God, having received grace and mercy, we may glorify the Source of all good things and gifts of the Giver, the One God, in the Holy Trinity, the glorified Father and Son and Holy Of the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen to that."

Prayer of Ksenia Milasskaya

Troparion, glas 8

"In you, Mother, it is known that you were saved in your image: for having taken up the cross, you followed Christ, and, having taught us to despise the flesh, for it passes away, but to be diligent about souls, things immortal. May your spirit also rejoice with the Angels, Venerable Xenia."

Kontakion, glas 2

"We honor your strange-minded memory, Xenia, and we honor you with love. We sing to Christ, who gives you the strength of healing in all of us, and always pray for us all."

Earlier, Izvestia told what they pray to the Holy Martyr Clement of Ancyra.
