The chemist listed tips on proper care of winter shoes.
Winter shoes are susceptible not only to the harmful effects of deicing materials, which include calcium, sodium and magnesium chlorides, but also to illiterate care on the part of their owner, which causes them to lose stability and quickly become unusable - it is important to monitor their condition, avoiding mistakes in care. This was announced on February 4 by Inna Artamonova, a chemist and associate professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Moscow Polytechnic University.
It is chlorides, as the expert noted, that cause the greatest damage to the surface of the product — they injure and dry the skin, as well as contribute to the peeling of parts. In addition, this compound, when in contact with an object, can form an unaesthetic white coating on it. Salt has the same effect on shoes, penetrating into the structure of the sole, hardening it and eventually leading to the formation of cracks.
Artamonova urged upon arrival home to try to immediately remove the remnants of reagents, noting that wiping shoes with a damp cloth does not save her from the listed risks. When processing, she advised giving preference primarily to specialized moisture-repellent formulations based on oils and wax.
"To do this, the shoes need to be rinsed with clean water. It is recommended to dry shoes at room temperature, away from radiators and direct heat sources. After that, you need to use impregnations. <...> Even if the shoes look normal visually, destructive processes can already be going on inside the material. After several months of active contact with reagents, shoes can literally fall apart — the seams will split, the sole will peel off, and the skin will crack. Prevention and regular care significantly prolong the life of shoes," the specialist summed up in an interview withГазетой.ги ".
Elena Smirnova, a phlebologist at the Yusupov Hospital in Moscow, said on January 8 that wearing tight shoes in winter can harm the health of the feet and increase swelling. She urged Russians, when choosing these items, not to give preference to those models that squeeze their knees and feet. In addition, she called it harmful to wear shoes with excessively high heels or, on the contrary, perfectly flat soles.
