The process of distancing the United States from Europe is of a long-term structural nature and began long before US President Donald Trump came to power. This was announced on February 2 by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas.

According to her, the European Union (EU) urgently needs to adapt to the new reality.

"In fact, if we look at transatlantic policy or the decisions of the US administration, it didn't start under President Trump. The policies of different administrations are similar in many ways," The Guardian newspaper quotes Kallas.

She also drew attention to the growing gap in the perception of allied relations on different sides of the Atlantic. Kallas suggested that after recent events — including trade tariffs, threats against Greenland and discussions about the future of NATO — this indicator among Europeans could decrease even more.

On January 26, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the end of an era when the United States bore the main burden of ensuring Europe's security. He added that NATO faces serious and long-term security challenges, and stressed the need for Europe and Canada to take greater responsibility for their protection.
