- Two significant earthquakes of magnitude 4.7 and 4.8 were recorded off the coast of the Kuril Islands.
Two earthquakes of magnitude 4.7 and 4.8, respectively, were recorded in the southern and northern Kuriles. This was announced on February 1 by the head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, Elena Semenova.
"An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 with an epicenter 94 km south-east of Iturup Island occurred on the morning of February 1. An hour later, forecasters registered the second with a magnitude of 4.7: its epicenter was located 95 km south-east of the city of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island," she told RIA Novosti.
The expert added that the tremors were felt in Iturup and Paramushir. She clarified that no tsunami alert had been issued as a result of the incident.
Semenova had also reported a 3.2 magnitude seismic event a day earlier, which was recorded off the western coast of Sakhalin Island. Then one of the tremors was felt, as she specified, in the villages of Orlovo and Olshanka. The tsunami threat, according to the expert, was not announced.
