The Ambassador of Namibia to Russia, Monica Nashandi, asked the Russian side for help in solving waste problems in her country during a meeting with representatives of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Russian Environmental Operator (REO). This was reported to Izvestia on January 30 in the REO.

"Namibia is a sparsely populated country in southern Africa. The population reaches 3 million people. For comparison, the maximum—loaded KPO Vostok can annually process 12 times more waste than is generated in the capital of this African country, so the Russian one can really help foreign colleagues," said Denis Butsaev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology.

During the meeting, REO presented the Russian experience in building a closed-loop economy, and also introduced foreign colleagues to domestic technologies and equipment in the field of waste management. Nashandi noted that Namibia is counting on Russia's help in organizing a waste collection, transportation and recycling system in the capital, Winhoek.

The Ambassador also drew attention to the need to reclaim large landfills near large cities. The Namibian side also expressed interest in technologies for the production of energy from waste, the REO added.

As a result, the parties agreed to organize meetings with representatives of relevant Namibian departments and organizations, as well as with the leadership of the city of Windhoek within the framework of the next meeting of the Russian-Namibian Intergovernmental Commission, which will be held at the end of February.

On January 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, at a meeting with his colleague from Namibia, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, said that friendly relations between Moscow and Windhoek are developing steadily on the principles of mutual respect and support. He also noted that regular high-level foreign policy consultations between the two countries will resume in the future.
