The political scientist stated about unclear guarantees of security for Ukraine
The specific content and format of possible security guarantees remain unclear. In addition, Kiev's previously published assumptions about guarantees look "quite fantastic." This opinion was expressed by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia on January 28.
"We do not know what these guarantees may consist of, whether it will be packaged into some kind of obligations for the Europeans, some kind of obligations for NATO, or whether the very Peace Council on Gas, which may become the Peace Council for Ukraine, will be crucial here," the expert noted.
According to Asafov, the issue of guarantees requires detailed study, since security guarantees are necessary not only for Ukraine, but also for Russia, and this factor should be taken into account in any agreements.
"The fact that the Americans are putting pressure on Kiev may force Kiev to abandon its absurd statements and proposals that nullify the likelihood of concluding any agreements," the political scientist concluded.
On the same day, the Reuters news agency reported that the United States was offering Ukraine to sign a peace agreement with Russia in exchange for security guarantees for the country. At the same time, the source of the publication disputes the information of the Financial Times, according to which Washington makes the provision of guarantees dependent on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donbass.
