A marine monitoring Center will be set up in the Gulf of Finland
The Finnish Border Guard Service, together with the Baltic States and the European Commission, is creating a Maritime Monitoring Center to protect critical underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland, the Reuters news agency reports.
"The competent authorities should have the ability and authority to intervene in situations arising in the territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone," the border agency said in a statement.
An increased alert has been announced in the Baltic states after several cases of damage to power cables, fiber-optic lines and gas pipelines that run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
On December 25, 2024, an emergency shutdown of the EstLink 2 DC cable between Estonia and Finland occurred. At the same time, the Estonian electricity and gas supply network operator Elering reported that the cause of the incident is not known, but the reliability of the republic's energy supply is ensured, reserve capacities are used to compensate for the lack of electricity. On suspicion of the incident, the Finnish police stopped the Eagle S tanker flying the flag of the Cook Islands. As a precaution against disrupting the investigation, seven crew members were banned from leaving the country.
Later, on January 16, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that statements about the Russian trace in the damage to cables at the bottom of the Baltic Sea were needed in order to restrict oil exports from Russia, as well as navigation in the waters.
