The death toll from a landslide in Indonesia has increased to 17
The death toll from a landslide in the Indonesian province of West Java has risen to 17 people. This was reported on January 23 by Reuters with reference to the National Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia.
"At least 17 people died due to the landslide, 73 are still missing," agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said.
It is reported that a landslide caused by heavy rains descended in the village of Pasir Langu, located in a hilly area about 100 km southeast of Jakarta. The disaster destroyed more than 30 residential buildings.
Muhari adds that the search and rescue efforts are complicated by the ongoing rainfall and new small landslides. Drones and heavy machinery are used for the search.
Prior to that, on January 24, Reuters reported that seven people had died in a landslide. 82 people are also missing. In addition, the Indonesian meteorological agency had previously warned of heavy rains in the region during the week.
