Dmitriev linked the US withdrawal from the WHO with the need to reform it
The withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) was an important signal for the need to reform it. This was announced on January 23 by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Special representative of the President of Russia for Investment and economic cooperation, on the social network X.
He noted that Washington's decision should push the organization to make internal changes.
"It is an important sign for WHO to reform itself, as WHO is an inefficient and corrupt bureaucratic structure," Dmitriev wrote.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that the United States had completed its withdrawal from WHO without paying the debt of about $260 million. The organization pointed out that according to the norms of American law, the country had to not only notify WHO a year in advance, but also pay off the debt in full. The US administration stated that the law does not contain a requirement for mandatory debt payment before leaving the organization. Health experts have expressed concerns that failure to cooperate with WHO could weaken U.S. preparedness to respond to global epidemiological threats.
