Awards class: Konstantin Bronzit will compete for the Oscar again
The largest number of Oscar nominations in the history is 16 for the film Sinners. And at the same time, the painting has a minimum chance of getting statuettes in most of these categories. The main contenders for the main Oscars are "Battle after Battle" by Paul Thomas Anderson and "Hamnet" by Chloe Zhao. At the Golden Globes, they were separated into different nominations, at the Oscars they will enter into a battle, the outcome of which is still difficult to predict. The main event for Russia is Konstantin Bronzit's animated short film "Three Sisters", which is competing for an Oscar, the third nomination in the career of the Russian classic. And this time the prize may go to him. The rest of the Oscar details are in the Izvestia review.
Records for nominations
On the night of March 16 (Moscow time), the winners of the Oscar, still the most prestigious film award in the world, will be announced. And this prestige does not lie in the fact that these films become international hits before or after that, and not in the fact that the Oscar sets the fashion.: film festivals do this, and the Oscars only capture their trends and to some extent inherit them.
The reason is that the Oscar is the most global award, it is the votes of more than 10 thousand professional cinematographers of all specialties and from almost all countries of the world. It makes no sense to guess how many films they actually watch and why they vote for those and not for others, but there is still nothing comparable to the Oscar in terms of diversity of opinions. Therefore, in the American press, for example, it is customary, if someone has been nominated at least once in their life, and even more so awarded an Oscar, to always indicate this in publications, as a title or as the word "sir" in the case of the British knights.
This year, the distribution of the nominees was, in general, quite predictable, only certain nuances matter. For example, the film "Sinners" has 16 nominations, which won consolation prizes for the best soundtrack and box office achievements at the Golden Globes.
It looks like we might be in for the same story as Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" and "The Irishman," which each had 10 nominations and no awards. They also often recall Spielberg's "Flowers of the Purple Fields", there were 11 of them — and also zeros.
"Sinners" is a reinterpretation of the 1990s hit "From Dusk till Dawn," and for all its artistic quality, the film is blatantly secondary in almost everything, so it may turn out that it will go down in history only with the number of nominations.
Who has a better chance of winning an Oscar
Against the background of the wild number of "Sinners" nominations, 13 pieces from "Battle after Battle" look a little paler, although this is also a lot. Moreover, this particular picture now seems to be the most likely contender to win in the "Best Film" and "Best Director" nominations. By the way, both films were produced by Warner Bros., which has a total of 30 nominations, which is especially striking against the backdrop of the widely discussed deal with Netflix, potentially the largest in the history of the film industry. And the announcement of the nominees could raise the stakes even higher in this story.
It will be all the more interesting if Spielberg wins the Oscar in the end — he is the producer of Chloe Zhao's Hamnet, and if the picture is named the "Best Film", it will be the master who will receive the statuette. The only thing that bothers me is that the film has eight nominations among its eight (that's a lot too!) there is no better male role, that is, Paul Mescal did not play Shakespeare well enough in a film about Shakespeare, according to the voters. And this is a worrying sign. However, we can recall that "Shakespeare in Love" was once not in this nomination either, but it eventually won seven Oscars, including "Best Film".
A number of paintings in the main nomination, and there are, by the way, as many as 10 of them, were clearly chosen for show, but there are also contenders who can unexpectedly take the lead at the finish line. This is Josh Safdie's "Marty the Magnificent" — and it's a pity that his brother Benny's film "The Wrecker" won't compete with him in this nomination, it would be beautiful. This is the Brazilian "Secret Agent", which was rather moderately successful in Cannes in May, but caused a sensation at the Golden Globes and is now present in all the main nominations. And this "Sentimental Value" by Joachim Trier is an ideal compromise option if "Battle after Battle" and "Hamnet" divide the film community too much.
There is also the brilliant "Bugonia" by Yorgos Lanthimos, but the Oscar is too conservative for such a movie. The other nominees have almost no chance here. It should be noted that "A simple accident" by Jafar Panahi did not get into the top ten, she got only "Best International Film" and "Best Screenplay". But against the background of the events in Iran, the interest of the voters in this picture may grow and bring her victory both there and there. The film was nominated for the Oscar, of course, not from Iran, but from France.
It is strange that "Evil 2" did not receive any nominations at all: the first part had ten of them. Park Chang-wook's "Elimination Method" flew by. There is no Richard Linklater's "New Wave," and he was not nominated for "Blue Moon," the film can be awarded for best Actor (Ethan Hawke) and best original Screenplay (Robert Kaplow). "Avatar" received only minor nominations, although academics used to love this franchise. There is also no "Jay Kelly" with George Clooney, and it seemed like the perfect Oscar movie.
What else can be said about the nominees
Netflix is represented rather modestly at the awards, although in other years it has become the leader of the Oscar race. "Frankenstein" and "Train Dreams" are competing for the title of best film, but hardly anyone believes in their victory, although both pictures are very vivid, they are still actively watched and discussed. Few people believe that Leonardo DiCaprio will win an Oscar for "Battle after Battle" — everyone is too fascinated by the magnificent and unrecognizable Timothy Chalamet at Safdie. Although Ethan Hawn may also get it for "Blue Moon." Emma Stone is unlikely to beat Jessie Buckley as the best actress, but there will be fierce competition in this category. After all, there's Renata Reinswe from Sentimental Value and Rose Byrne ("I'd Kick You If I Could"), plus Kate Hudson ("The Melody of Their Dreams").
There is also a new nomination for "Best Casting", but if there is an intrigue here, it is only in why there is no, say, "Best Stuntman" or "Stunt Director", this is more a workshop question.
In the "Best International Film" category, "Sentimental Value" has no competitors, although "Secret Agent" has strong support, "The Voice of Hind Rajab" plays on anti—Israeli sentiments, "A Simple Accident" is about repression in Iran, and art cinema is represented by the raver trip "Sirat".
Netflix has a chance to win the prize for the best feature animation: "K-pop Demon Hunters" can beat "Zootopia 2" and "Elio". It is noteworthy that "Demon Slayer: Endless Fortress" did not make it into the nominees, but meanwhile this animated blockbuster collected almost $ 800 million at the box office and became an event in the anime world. In the short animation, we are rooting only for Konstantin Bronzit's "Three Sisters" (submitted from Cyprus under the pseudonym Timur Kognov), and this may be the first Oscar for Russia since 2000, when Alexander Petrov won for "The Old Man and the Sea." Let's remind that last year Yura Borisov was among the nominees, and before him there was the documentary "Exit" by Maxim and Evgenia Arbugaev. Bronzit told Izvestia that he had applied for a visa to the United States in the summer and would attend the ceremony.
Now it makes sense to keep an eye on the awards that will be presented by professional Hollywood guilds. Most often, their choice coincides with the Oscars, but there are exceptions, so the intrigue will persist until mid-March.
