Five Oscars for the film "Anora": for best Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Mikey Madison), best Original Screenplay and best editing. Yura Borisov and Mark Edelstein rose to the most prestigious stage in the world of cinema — they received the final award together with the film's team. This Oscar was one of the most predictable, coincided with forecasts in almost everything, and there was not a single speech about the internal political processes in the United States. Izvestia watched the ceremony and summarizes the impressions.

"Oscar" began with "Anora" and ended with her

The first Oscar nomination on the night of March 2-3 in Moscow was "Best Supporting Actor", the most important for Russian cinephiles, because it was there that Yura Borisov fought for the golden statuette.By that time, everyone already knew that Kieran Culkin would receive the Oscar for "Real Pain," because he had already been awarded a week ago by the Screen Actors Guild, and their prize usually coincides with the Oscar. And when Culkin was declared the winner, the Russian audience on social media expressed such support for Borisov, which does not happen in every football match. After all, in order to cheer for the artist, people were looking for a place to watch the Oscars at three o'clock in the morning, since ABC is officially unavailable in Russia. Culkin, by the way, caused the first Oscar scandal when receiving the prize: in his acceptance speech he did not mention his brother Macaulay, with whom he played in "Home Alone".

It seems to me that this is primarily the merit of the screenwriter," director and screenwriter Anton Maslov told Izvestia. — The character that pushes the artist is very cool. But, with all the charm of Kiran, Yura still won for me. This is our new Bodrov. With an open mind and that smile.

Of the six Anora nominations, the supporting role was the only one where the film received nothing. The director of the film, Sean Baker, did not have time to go on stage, he received both "Best Editing", "Best Original Screenplay", and "Best Director". Accepting the latest award, he, by the way, slightly kicked streaming, making a speech about the importance of cinema viewing, and in this regard, about the importance of releasing films, even if they are made by online platforms. Quentin Tarantino won the Oscar for directing, and Sean Baker said to him, "If you hadn't invited Mikey Madison to star (in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. — Ed.), there would be no "Anora".

And a few minutes later, Mikey herself went out for the Oscar for best actress, and she beat everyone's favorite and favorite Dami Moore. When the Oscar for best film was announced, the Anora team took the stage, and Yura Borisov, Mark Eidelstein and Daria Ekamasova stood and rejoiced, it seems, most of all, and the audience applauded them standing.

— I'm terribly glad for "Anora," screenwriter Andrei Zolotarev told Izvestia after the award, without whom, by the way, there might not have been Anora either. After all, he wrote the script for the film "One Hundred years Ahead," where Borisov met Edelstein and then advised the young man Baker. — I think they've collected everything they could. It's very cool. And I'm sorry that Yura Borisov didn't get this Oscar, but the fact is that he was there. I think he was genuinely happy with everyone. Well, it's clear that he's the best for us anyway!

How were the other Oscars distributed

Emilia Perez, one of the main films of the past season, the favorite of the Cannes Film Festival, the winner of the Golden Globe and the winner of the largest number of Oscar nominations this year, had a huge failure at the Oscars. Of the 13 targets, "Emilia Perez" got into only two — "Best Song" and "Best Supporting Actress", although it's strange to say that Zoe Saldana (or, as they are now more accurately beginning to say, Saldana) has a second plan, because we we look at what is happening in the film through her eyes. In her speech, Saldana pointedly thanked director Jacques Audiard and ignored Carla Sophia Gascon, whom the film's team had disowned more than once after her statements on social media and interviews.

However, among the favorites, not only "Emilia Perez" remained on the edge. "Bob Dylan: Unknown" (eight nominations) and "Nosferatu" (four nominations) did not receive any Oscars at all, and "The Apprentice" about Donald Trump remained without awards. But the first statuette in history was awarded to a painting from Latvia. The animated full-meter "Stream", an experimental film about animals, shot without words and for almost a penny, bypassed both "Puzzle 2" and "Wild Robot", although not all those who voted were her fans.

Konstantin Bronzit, a member of the American Film Academy and a multiple Oscar nominee, for example, noted in an interview with Izvestia that there are many flaws in the film, and not only the director's.

When, at the beginning of the film, the dog, following the cat out of the water, begins to shake itself off exactly the way dogs do — with spinning, helical movements — not a drop of water falls from it! — this is Bronzit speaking. — We know what it's like to be next to a dog like that — you'll come out of the shower. And when we see how naturalistic the director is chasing in the image, a simple question arises: did you forget to insert the spray from the dog? Didn't have time? Failed, failed? But it's just a small thing, there's still a car full of it. And problems with meanings, too. Therefore, a Golden Globe and two Oscar nominations would be more than enough for him. This is a completely accidental success in the career of a hitherto unknown name — from dirt to princes. I've seen this happen many times in my life. This director has suddenly appeared, and will suddenly disappear from view. Or he'll pop out with exactly the same new movie, trying to enter the same river a second time.

Other surprises included the Oscar for Best International Film for the drama "I'm Still Here" by Walter Salles, although it seemed that Emilia Perez would definitely get the award here. Strangely enough, this is where the amazing moments at the last Oscar end.

But it was a great joke from Mick Jagger. He came out to present the prize for the song and said, "At first they asked Bob Dylan to present this award. And he's like this: the best songs were written in the movie "Bob Dylan: Unknown to Anyone." In general, he told the organizers: find someone younger. I'm just a little younger!"

The Oscars were held with almost no politics

The award was expected to do what it has always been famous for: commentaries on political topics, tapping into the main pain points of our time. History has preserved the rejection of the Oscar in protest, and the articulation of ideas very far from glamorous Hollywood, and, of course, jokes about Donald Trump, which for ten years could be heard more than once from the stage. There was almost none of that this time.

Zoe Saldana very delicately reminded that she comes from an immigrant family, which, of course, hints at the harsh US policy in this regard, but is too delicate to be taken seriously.

The authors of the film "There is no Other Land" ("Best Documentary") called for peace in the Gaza Strip and at the same time for the release of Israeli hostages, noting the role of the United States in this process.Walter Salles recalled the military dictatorship in Brazil half a century ago.

But in general, the artists spent their allotted 45 seconds thanking their families, friends and colleagues, although Sean Baker also noted an important role in the installation of his dog's painting. Adrian Brody slightly varied this monotony. He spoke the longest, and when, at the end of his time, piano music began playing behind the stage, Brody harshly interrupted her, saying that he could do that too (an allusion to the film "The Pianist," for which Brody won an Oscar in 2003). To deafening applause from the audience, surprised by such audacity, Brody delivered a fiery speech against anti-Semitism, which the film "Brutalist" is dedicated to, but clearly omitted a much more important point. The point is that the meaning of this monumental painting is that a talented Hungarian Jew got out of one concentration camp and ended up in another, which turned out to be post-war America for him.

"The Brutalist" is a very tough film, merciless towards the United States. Maybe that's why he has only two awards out of ten nominations — for the role of Brody and for the music. The prizes for "Anora", a painting much more complimentary to the United States, seem quite natural in this sense.
