A possible agreement between the United States and NATO on Greenland does not imply a full transfer of sovereignty over Greenland by Denmark. This was reported on January 22 by the Axios portal, citing two sources.

"[The agreement] does not provide for the transfer of full sovereignty over Greenland from Denmark to the United States," the publication says.

It is noted that, according to the plans, the initiative may include updating the document "Greenland Defense Agreement" from 1951 between the United States and Denmark. As part of the agreement, the United States was given the opportunity to build its own bases on the island, as well as create "defensive zones" if necessary.

Among other things, it is planned to deploy facilities of the Golden Dome missile defense system on the territory of Greenland.

On January 21, Trump announced that the Greenland deal being developed by the United States would be indefinite. He also confirmed that after negotiations with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, he canceled the decision to impose duties against a number of European countries, which were supposed to enter into force on February 1 due to the situation around Greenland.
