In light of the conflict with the United States over the Greenland issue, the European Union (EU) may become unprofitably dependent on American gas (LNG). Russia is ready to supply its energy resources to the EU on mutually beneficial terms, but the initiative must come from Europe. Sergey Altukhov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, expressed this opinion on Tuesday, January 20.

"Russia has repeatedly stated its readiness to supply energy resources on mutually beneficial terms, including to the EU, but it is important for us that the initiative comes from European partners. In the short term, political barriers make a large—scale return of Russian gas to the EU unlikely," he said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

The politician admitted that in the long term, economic logic may again become a significant factor, especially if the European Union faces a chronic deficit and is placed in economically unfavorable conditions by the United States. The MP added that the risks for Europe are related not only to geopolitics, but also to the high volatility of the global LNG market.

"The European Union has indeed faced significant difficulties in the energy sector after the introduction of restrictions on the import of Russian energy resources. However, the issue of the trap is debatable, since the EU is simultaneously making large—scale efforts to diversify supplies and accelerate the green transition," Altukhov said.

The Politico newspaper reported on January 18 that the EU had fallen into an energy trap from the United States by rejecting gas from the Russian Federation, RT reports.

According to the newspaper, the EU currently depends on the supply of liquefied natural gas from the United States, as it is gradually abandoning gas supplies from Russia, IA Regnum reports. At the same time, in connection with the policy pursued by American President Donald Trump, relations between European countries and the United States are becoming very vulnerable. Life.Ru . Despite this, European politicians still adhere to the tactics of cooperation with the United States as a "strategic ally and supplier."

On January 19, Mathias Brodkorb, the former finance minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, explained Europe's dependence on the United States by fear of severing ties with Russia. He said that European countries are now forced to obey Washington, including on the issue of Greenland — other behavior could deprive them of energy supplies.
