- The media reported on the beginning of the demolition of the UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem
The Israeli authorities have begun dismantling the headquarters complex of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem. This was reported on January 20 by Tagesschau.
Israeli forces have deployed heavy equipment, including bulldozers, to demolish the agency's headquarters, the authors of the material specify.
Israel recognizes East Jerusalem as its territory, therefore, in accordance with the law prohibiting the agency's activities on the territory of the Jewish state, the country's land administration announced that it had taken possession of a plot of about 4.6 hectares on the territory of which the organization's headquarters is located.
The head of the agency, Philippe Lazzarini, condemned the decision to demolish the headquarters, calling it "a new level of open and deliberate disregard for international law."
Last October, the UN court ordered Israel to provide for the basic needs of the Palestinians. The Court pointed out that Israel's obligations in this area are enshrined in Article 59 IV of the Geneva Convention. The advisory opinion was prepared based on the results of the meetings where the issues of Israel's obligations regarding the presence of international organizations in the Palestinian territories were considered.
On October 22, Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Danny Danon, called the advisory decision of the UN court, which obliges Israel to provide for the basic needs of the Palestinian population and cooperate with humanitarian organizations, shameful.
