Sections of damaged tracks were found at the site of the railway disaster in Spain.
Technicians who examined the crash site on the Spanish railway found areas on the tracks with broken connections. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on January 19.
"They (technicians — Ed.) discovered that a faulty joint created a gap between the rail sections, which widened as the trains moved along the track," the material says.
According to the investigation, the first paddocks of the train passed through a gap in the rails, but the eighth and last ones left the tracks, dragging the seventh and sixth wagons with them.
The derailment of two trains became known on January 18. It was noted that firefighters, police and ambulance crews were sent to the scene of the tragedy to eliminate the consequences of the incident. In turn, Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said that the accident with two high-speed trains that derailed was "extremely strange." According to him, the section of the railway where the tragedy occurred has recently been repaired, and the derailed train is relatively new.
Later, the number of victims of the train crash in Spain increased to 152. According to the latest information, five people received extremely serious injuries, 24 more were seriously injured, all of them were hospitalized.
