- The political scientist compared the actions of Russian and US police officers in the fight against violators.
The Russian police, who were forced to open fire on the wheels of a Porsche SUV in Balashikha, acted more humanely than law enforcement officers from the United States, who recently opened fire in a similar situation, killing a female driver. Political scientist Alexey Yaroshenko told Izvestia about this on January 16.
"Today we have seen another proof that our law enforcement officers are much more humane and humane than, for example, their colleagues in the United States. But at the same time, it should be understood that if the traffic police officers had opened fire to kill, it would not have been censured, or some kind of punishment or public condemnation," the expert noted.
Yaroshenko noted that the person who tried to escape probably did not do so because he violated traffic regulations. There could be traces of more serious crimes inside the Porsche car, which is why the driver wanted to avoid a collision with the police.
"He's got drugs there, or he's kidnapped a man, or he's got a gun there, or even a corpse, that's hard to say. I cannot say what threatens him, I can say that we need to expand the rights of law enforcement officers so that they can deal with such repeat offenders and <...> prevent these offenses," the political scientist said.
He added that the incident in Balashikha showed a high level of public danger to the person they were trying to detain. Because of this, the police in certain cases should be able to act in more stringent ways in accordance with the law.
Earlier in the day, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk, reported that in the city of Balashikha, Moscow region, police used weapons to stop illegal actions by the driver of a premium car. The violator was taken to the local police department, while the man refused a medical examination.
Witnesses of the incident told Izvestia that when the police opened fire on the wheels of the car, the driver accelerated and drove to the other side of the road, but got stuck in a snowdrift there. The source added that the attacker turned out to be Ravil A., who had already been prosecuted for theft, administrative offenses and drugs.
On January 7, a 37-year-old woman, who was a US citizen, was shot dead in the American city of Minneapolis (Minnesota) during an operation involving ICE agents. According to the Ministry of Internal Security, she allegedly tried to use a car to run over employees and escape. After the incident, mass protests began. Later, US President Donald Trump said that the murder of the woman occurred in self-defense.
