On Friday and next weekend, January 16-18, traffic police officers will conduct massive and continuous checks on the country's roads, special attention will be paid to the search for drunk drivers. The raids were announced by the regional departments of the State Traffic Inspectorate.

Raids on drunk motorists will take place in Moscow, Tver, Samara, Kirov regions and other regions of the country.

The State Traffic Inspectorate recalled that driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as refusing a medical examination, entail disqualification for a period of one and a half to two years and a heavy fine. In addition, in some cases, the driver is already facing criminal liability.

"Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the most serious traffic violations, which leads to the most serious consequences. Drunk driving on a winter road does not leave even a minimal chance of a successful trip. We urge citizens who have witnessed how a drunk person plans to get in or gets behind the wheel of a car, behaves inappropriately, creates dangerous situations on the road, to report this to the police. This message can save someone's life," said Police Colonel Anton Belan, Deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child Traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

On January 12, the State Traffic Inspectorate reported that during the New Year holidays (from January 1 to January 11, 2026), according to preliminary data, 2,329 car accidents occurred on the country's roads, in which 348 people were killed and 3,515 injured.
