EU Parliament leaders called for specific support for Greenland
The leaders of the European Parliament (EU) called on the Commission and the Council of the EU to identify concrete and tangible support for Greenland and Denmark. This was reported on the parliament's website on January 14.
"The European Parliament calls on the European Commission and the European Council to identify concrete and tangible support for Greenland and Denmark, respecting EU principles and law, international law and the NATO Charter," the statement said.
The ministry recalled that Denmark and the United States supported the NATO agreement on the protection of Arctic security, as well as the 1916 agreement in which the United States recognized that all of Greenland is rightfully the territory of Denmark.
On the same day, Danish radio Danmarks Radio (DR) reported that Denmark had begun the transfer of military equipment and advanced units to Greenland. To this, Trump said that Denmark should "immediately get out" of Greenland with its "dog sleds."
NBC reported that the United States could pay up to $700 billion for the purchase of Greenland if the American leader can reach an appropriate deal. This amount includes the allocation of more than half of the annual budget of the US Department of War for national security.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on January 13 that the island's residents want to stay with Denmark. According to him, Greenland has never been sold and did not want to join the United States. Later, Trump said that Nielsen was in trouble because of his words about his desire to remain part of Denmark.
