A US attempt to seize Greenland by force would lead to the collapse of NATO. This was announced on January 14 by Kurt Volker, the former special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine.

"First of all, if the United States tried to seize Greenland by force, I really think it would mean the end of NATO...> If a member of [NATO] <... If I violated this, other NATO members would not see the point of remaining in an alliance with the United States," Volker said in an interview with The Kyiv Independent.

In his opinion, there is a pattern in the actions of US President Donald Trump: he is becoming more comfortable using military force after fearing "endless wars" in his first term.

Volker believes that European governments now see the United States as a key but very unstable security partner that is unpredictable in its reactions.

Referring to the Ukrainian issue, the ex-diplomat suggested that Trump wants to reach a deal at any cost to stop the conflict, and he is less concerned about the content of the agreement itself, which explains Washington's "zigzag" rhetoric.

On the same day, Danish radio Danmarks Radio (DR) reported that Denmark had begun the transfer of military equipment and advanced units to Greenland. To this, Trump said that Denmark should "immediately get out" of Greenland with its "dog sleds."

On the same day, NBC reported that the United States could pay up to $700 billion for the purchase of Greenland if the American leader could reach an appropriate deal. This amount includes the allocation of more than half of the annual budget of the US Department of War for national security.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on January 13 that the island's residents want to stay with Denmark. According to him, Greenland has never been sold and did not want to join the United States. Later, Trump said that Nielsen was in trouble because of his words about his desire to remain part of Denmark.
