Yuri Varakin, head of the Russian Hydrometeorological Situation Center, told what kind of weather is expected in Moscow and the region in the near future.
In an interview with Radio 1 on Wednesday, January 14, the expert noted that the winter weather with sunshine and light snow will continue until tomorrow, after which the region will be influenced by the frontal zone. According to him, a light snowfall will end by lunchtime, and then no significant precipitation is expected until January 22. At the same time, frosts will increase due to the arrival of an extensive anticyclone, and in some places the temperature may drop to -23 degrees.
He also noted that the cold weather will last at least until Epiphany, with no signs of a thaw. According to the forecaster, now there is a real January winter with a record amount of snow, comparable to the 1956 figures, and the average temperature of the month will be slightly below the climatic norm.
Earlier on January 14, the head of the Meteo forecasting center, Alexander Shuvalov, told Izvestia that frosts of up to -25 degrees were expected in the capital on the night of Saturday, January 17. He added that at the turn of January 16-18, Pushkin's weather will come with frosts and sunshine.
In a conversation with NSN on the same day, the specialist noted that a decrease in air temperature is expected in the metropolitan region for Epiphany, and 40-degree frosts will come to Barnaul at all. Currently, the area of high pressure covers almost the entire territory of Russia, writes RT.
On the same day, meteorologist Tatiana Pozdnyakova, in an interview with 360.ru She said that no significant precipitation is expected in Moscow until January 19: only light snow is possible, which will not affect the height of the snow cover. According to the forecaster, it can occur due to freezing of the air in the upper atmosphere and manifest itself in the form of so-called "ice needles".
At the same time, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos center, reported that Moscow and the Moscow region had recorded a significant excess of snow cover compared to the average.
