- Lavrov said it was impossible for third countries to change relations between Russia and Iran
The nature of the long-established relations between Russia and Iran cannot be changed by any third party. This was announced on January 14 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after talks with Namibian Minister of International Relations Selma Ashipala-Musavyi.
"I don't think any third party can change the fundamental nature of relations between Moscow and Tehran. This character is based on the agreements that were reached between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran," Lavrov said at a press conference.
The Minister noted that the nature of diplomatic relations between Russia and Iran meets the interests of two states and two peoples, and is also embodied in a number of practical projects. Among them are the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the implementation of plans in the field of transport infrastructure — the North—South corridor, and others. These issues are on the agenda and are of particular importance for the development of the entire region.
Earlier, on January 13, the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said that the EU actively supports participants in mass anti-government protests in Iran and advocates a change in the political system in the country. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called her statements outrageous the next day.
On January 13, US President Donald Trump also called on Iranian protesters to seize government offices in the country. He canceled all meetings with Iranian officials and noted that assistance to the protesters was "on the way."
