- A bill has been submitted to the US Congress banning presidents from naming objects after themselves.
Senators of the US Congress have introduced a bill "On stopping the renaming of buildings for the sake of vanity and selfishness" (SERVE Act). The law will prohibit current presidents from naming buildings and federal facilities in their honor. This was reported on January 13 by The Guardian newspaper.
"[US President] Donald Trump has no right to assign his name to any government agency of his choice. There are no kings or dictators in America, and this law prohibits him or any future current president from creating monuments in his honor, because these landmarks belong to the people," said Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.
The bill was introduced by Bernie Sanders, Chris Van Hollen and Angela Olsbrooks in collaboration with Cory Booker, Adam Schiff, Ron Wyden, Chuck Schumer and Ben Ray Lujan. According to the authors of the initiative, by such actions, Trump is leading the country towards an authoritarian system and creating the myth of a "Great Leader."
The SERVE Act prohibits the naming or renaming of any federal building or other facility in honor of the current president, as well as the use of federal funds for these purposes. In addition, the lawmakers proposed to promptly apply the law to the Trump-Kennedy Center and the Trump Institute for Peace.
On December 4, Bloomberg reported that the US State Department had renamed the United States Institute of Peace in honor of Trump, whose administration had previously tried to liquidate the organization. It is noted that on December 4, the American leader plans to hold a ceremony at the institute with President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Felix Chisekedi and Leader of Rwanda Paul Kagame, who are expected to sign a peace agreement to end years of hostilities.
