On January 10, the son of the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Reza Pahlavi, who opposes the current government in the Islamic Republic, called on his fellow citizens to take to the streets and start strikes.

"We will completely bring the worn-out and fragile repressive apparatus of the Islamic Republic to its knees. In this regard, I call on workers and employees of key sectors of the economy — especially transport, as well as the oil, gas and energy sectors — to launch a general strike," he said in a video message recorded against the background of the country's old national flag.

The oppositionist explained that now the protesters should have a specific goal — they need to start preparing for the conquest of the central districts of various cities. He recommended that his followers, in order to achieve their goal, move to the centers of settlements, simultaneously connecting disparate groups of people.

On January 1, the Fars news agency reported riots that escalated into clashes with the police in Iran. Then it became known about the three dead. On January 7, Fox News reported that the protesters had managed to take control of two cities in the west of the republic — they controlled Abdanan and Malekshahi in Ilam province. The next day, US President Donald Trump announced that his country's military forces could strike Iran if the authorities killed protesters, and later added that he was "very closely" monitoring the situation.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said on January 9 that the Iranian youth and the entire nation must maintain unity, which will allow them to defeat any enemy. After that, Iran's Supreme National Security Council accused the United States and Israel of organizing unrest in the country.
