Trump expressed hope for an alliance between the United States and Venezuela
US President Donald Trump expects Venezuela to become an ally of the United States. The politician announced this on January 9 during a meeting with the heads of oil and gas companies.
At the same time, he noted that the United States would not like to see Russia and China in both Venezuela and Greenland.
"If Greenland doesn't become ours, then eventually Russia or China will become your closest neighbor," Trump said.
Earlier that day, Trump said that the United States was planning a "second wave" of strikes against Venezuela, but it would not be required. He added that despite large investments in the Venezuelan oil industry, the United States would not require the Latin American country to reimburse the financial losses of American oil companies.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said that the United States is striving for internal reconciliation of the warring parties in Venezuela and stabilization of the situation in the country. According to him, American plans include the modernization of Venezuela's oil infrastructure and the subsequent transition to a new government in Caracas.
