Russia welcomes Venezuela's efforts to protect its sovereignty

Russia welcomes the efforts of the Venezuelan authorities to protect state sovereignty and national interests. This was announced on January 6 in a statement on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

"We welcome the efforts made by the official authorities of this country to protect state sovereignty and national interests. We confirm Russia's unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan people and government," the statement said.

The statement notes that the oath of office of the Executive Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, to the post of authorized president of the country demonstrates the government's determination to ensure the unity of power and create conditions for stable development.

Russia expressed its readiness to continue supporting Venezuela and reaffirmed its position on the country's right to determine its own fate without external interference. The Russian Foreign Ministry also called for de-escalation of the situation and solving problems through dialogue, stressing that Latin America should remain a zone of peace.

On January 5, Rodriguez took the oath of office as interim president of the country. On January 4, the Supreme Court of Venezuela recognized her as acting president.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was brought to New York Federal Court on January 5 to face charges. In court, he declared his innocence and said that he was still the president of his country. The American court agreed to schedule a visit by consular officers to Venezuela. The judge ordered Maduro to appear in court on March 17 for a hearing.

On January 5, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced that the United States had violated international law in Venezuela. Guterres also noted that the future of Venezuela after the US operation remains uncertain and causes great concern.

On January 3, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States had successfully launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela. He noted that the President of the republic, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Celia Flores, were captured and taken away from the territory of the state. The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the US leadership to release Maduro.
