- Japanese company executives canceled their annual trip to China for the first time in 13 years
A group of Japanese CEOs postponed their annual visit to China for the first time in 13 years, reflecting political tensions between Tokyo and Beijing over Taiwan. This was reported on December 31 by Bloomberg.
According to the agency, the Japanese delegation of 200 leaders will miss the trip, originally scheduled for January 20, due to difficulties in organizing the meeting. At the same time, the Japan-China Economic Association said in a statement that it is making every effort to make the trip happen.
The article notes that the meetings have been held annually since 1975, with the exception of 2012 and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Kyodo news agency reported yesterday that an unnamed official responsible for national security issues in the administration of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi considers it necessary for the country to acquire nuclear weapons. He noted that he considers this unrealistic, as this event may cause a negative reaction both within the country and abroad.
On December 19, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said that China and the international community should be vigilant after statements by a Japanese official about the need to possess nuclear weapons. According to him, such statements reflect the desire of Japanese ultra-right conservative forces to revive militarism and free themselves from the constraints of the post-war international order.
